Participation of the Islamic Committee of the International Crescent (ICIC) In the Statutory meetings of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies 22-31 October 2024 Geneva – Switzerland
The ICIC delegation participated in the Statutory meetings of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, held in Geneva during the period 22-28 October 2024, which consisted of:
1- H. E. Ambassador Ali Mahmoud Buheda, ICIC President.
2- Dr. Mohamed Hamad Elasbali, ICIC Executive Director.
3- Mr. Selcuk Ozturk, ICIC Regional Representative for North Asia and Europe.
The ICIC participates in these meetings as an observer in the work of the 24th session of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, (IFRC) held during on 22-25 October 2024 AD, attended by (191) Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (RCRC), and the Thirty-Fourth International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, which was attended by delegations of (196) States Parties to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 AD, in addition to delegations of (191) RCRC and the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross(ICRC ) and the IFRC delegation, the Statutory meetings discuss the following topics:
– Compliance with international humanitarian law.
– Strengthening the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers.
– Strengthening sustainable humanitarian work led by local entities.
– Predicting climate challenges, preparing for them and adapting to their effects.
– The importance of “Disaster Response Law”.
– The impact of digital technology on wars.
The ICIC participates in the Statutory meetings as observers , within the framework of its humanitarian role alongside with other organizations working in the humanitarian fields, to confront humanitarian challenges, and to confirm the basic humanitarian principles on which it relies in its work and which are similar to the humanitarian principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. These meetings are an important opportunity to hold direct bilateral meetings, were held with a large number of RCRC from the OIC countries , and other humanitarian organizations, to discuss current and future challenges in humanitarian work, and to enhance joint bilateral and collective cooperation. At the statutory meetings of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, differences are set aside and the focus is on the shared responsibility to protect and assist those in need, which constitutes a profound strength and places before everyone a wealth of experiences, visions and innovative solutions. This broad spectrum of backgrounds enhances flexibility in work and enriches discussions aimed at achieving profound results in the field of humanitarian work, which was through seminars and topics on the agenda and side events, including the seminar on coordination between humanitarian organizations in which participation was made. At the conclusion of the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, five important resolutions were adopted:
1- Establishing a global culture of compliance with international humanitarian law.
2- Protecting civilians and other protected persons and objects from the potential human cost of information and communication technology activities during armed conflict.
3- Strengthening disaster risk governance through comprehensive legal and regulatory frameworks.
4- Enabling leadership, capacity and implementation in the field of principled humanitarian work at the local level and enhancing resilience.
5- Protecting people from the humanitarian impacts of extreme weather and climate phenomena.
